2. memoQ uses CAL license pools on terminal servers
If you plan to use memoQ on a terminal server, you will need a pool of concurrent-access licenses (CALs). A CAL license pool defines how many memoQ translator pro and project manager licenses can be used at the same time.
You need to use memoQ TMS to distribute concurrent-access licenses across your organization. The memoQ TMS needs to be in CAL licensing mode. The other licensing mode, ELM (enterprise license management) is not compatible with terminal servers. For instructions on switching the licensing mode, see Installing memoQ TMS and switching to CAL licensing.
When you use memoQ TMS to distribute CAL licenses, it will always know how many licenses are in use, and who is using them. In addition, this same server will allow users to run memoQ. The licensing server ensures that no more translator pro and project manager licenses are being used at the same time than allowed. Moreover, the licensing server monitors this in real time.
When a user who is allowed to run memoQ starts it, the memoQ TMS takes away one license from the pool. When the same user closes memoQ, the server puts the license back in the license pool.
To make this work, memoQ contacts the licensing server once every 30 seconds, and notifies the server when it is closed. If the connection is lost, memoQ loses the license within 2 minutes, and the licensing server returns the license to the pool.
To use a CAL license, memoQ needs to remain connected to the memoQ TMS. If you use memoQ on a terminal server, make sure that the terminal server computer can always reach the memoQ TMS computer.
Standalone CAL server no longer available: You can no longer use a standalone CAL server to distribute CAL licenses. If you already have a license for the standalone CAL server, you can still install it, but it will not work with memoQ versions released in 2016 or later (that is, 7.8.150 or newer). The standalone CAL server was discontinued from January 1, 2016, and no new licenses can be purchased for it.
One single license pool is enough: You do not need a separate license pool for your terminal servers. With one single CAL license pool, you can license memoQ for both your employees who use it on their desktop or laptop computers, and for those who access it through a terminal server or a web browser. A CAL license remains in use as long as memoQ is running, and it is released when memoQ is closed.
Support for multiple terminal servers: You can use memoQ on multiple terminal servers (a terminal server farm). Your CAL license pool is managed outside the terminal server, so you can distribute memoQ over multiple terminal servers for better load balancing in your server infrastructure.
When memoQ runs on a terminal server, it is always the memoQ desktop app (not memoQ TMS) that runs on that server. Practically speaking, users receive a virtual desktop where they can run memoQ, just like on their own machines.
memoQ TMS cannot be on a terminal server: If your organization uses memoQ TMS, but users must also be able to run memoQ from a terminal server, you need two server environments – that is, two different virtual or physical machines: one for memoQ TMS and another for the terminal server running the memoQ instances.
ELM licenses must be converted to CAL: If your organization uses memoQ TMS with ELM licenses, but at the same time, you need to manage your licenses in a single pool and use memoQ on a terminal server, your ELM licenses need to be converted into CAL licenses. It is also possible that you were using an ELM license pool, and a Terminal Server license pool with a pre-2015 version of memoQ. In this case, the two license pools must be converted into one single CAL license pool. In either case, contact your account manager at memoQ Zrt. to take care of the conversion before you switch your memoQ TMS to CAL licensing mode, and definitely before installing or upgrading memoQ on the terminal server.
