File export troubleshooting guide
This guide will tell you all you need to know about troubleshooting document export issues to make the best out of your memoQ TMS.
The solutions explained here are grouped into four categories:
Before troubleshooting and reimporting any source file, export the bilingual MQXLZ file. It could be helpful for memoQ support in case you need more help.
1. The Export (Stored Path) option
If you are a translator working on the checked-out version of a server project and not the one who uploaded the document on the server, the Export (Stored Path) option will not work. Always use the Export (Choose Path) option instead.
2. The file path is too long
If you tried to export a document from the checked-out version of a server project, it is possible that some of the files were deeply nested in your folder structure. If their project names and/or the file names were too long (more than 260 characters), you won't be able to do that.
What can you do in such a case?

Sync your checked-out project.

Use a shorter name in the Project name field.

Check out the project again.

The Project already checked out window appears.
Under the Open existing or check out new section, click Check out new copy.

Click OK to confirm and continue.

Try to export the file.
If it still doesn’t work, go back to step 2 and ask your Project Manager to export the document directly from the server.
3. Missing tags or tag errors
Missing tags in the target or the source language is a common case of failed exports.
To fix tag-related issues, follow these steps:

Run the QA check and fix all errors and tag-related warnings (including the ones ignored the first time).
You may want to use specific QA settings to check only the tags. Try to export the document.
If it still doesn’t work, go to the next step.

Check if Track changes is turned on. Then, check if some tags in the target segments were removed in track change mode.
If yes, accept those changes.
If that doesn’t work, go to the next step.

In the failed export error message, find the segment number causing the export to fail.
Check if important tags (e.g., hyperlinks [hlnk]) were removed in one of the source segments next to the specified segment. It is possible that the segment number shown in the error message is not accurate (we recommend checking the 10 previous and the 10 following segments).
If that is the case, reimport the document with the same filter, then X-Translate, and fix segments that are not X-Translated. Then, try to export.
If it still doesn’t work, go to the next step.

Duplicate the source file. Give it a different file name, import it into memoQ, and copy source to target. Make sure not to confirm anything in the TM. Try to export. If it works, pre-translate this new document only with the project working TM, and fix segments that are not context matches.
If it fails, the problem lies within the document or memoQ.
Go to the next category.
4. Filter issues or memoQ issues
To fix filter or build-related issues, follow these steps:

Save the original document in a similar file type (e.g., DOCX to DOC, PPTX to PPT).
Reimport the document, X-Translate, and fix segments that are not X-Translated. Only do that if you are sure you won’t lose any content in the process. For example, SmartArt content in Word 2007+ and PowerPoint 2007+ will be converted to pictures in Word 97-2003 and PowerPoint 97-2003. Try to export this new document. If it works, don’t forget to save back the translation in the original file type.
If the export fails, go to the next step.

Save the original document using its original file type. Reimport the document, X-Translate, and fix segments that are not X-Translated. Try to export this new document.
If the export fails, go to the next step.

If you upgraded to a new memoQ version before you completed the project, create a new memoQ project and import the document in its original format. Copy source to target and try to export it.
If the file exports, the next step is to pre-translate the file from the previous version.
To do so:

Go back to the original project you translated.

Create a new translation memory (Simple Context) and make it primary.

Confirm and update all rows of the document into that new TM.

Go back to the new project and pre-translate the file with the newly created TM.

Fix segments that are not 101% matches (empty segments, missing tags, etc.).
If the file doesn’t export, go to the next step.

If the export still fails, contact our memoQ support team and specify the delivery deadline.
Our support team will need the following:

The original file.
-
The memoQ bilingual file (use Export bilingual and select memoQ XLIFF).

The error message you received, if there was any (click Copy Details to Clipboard to send the full-length error message).

Information about the memoQ translator pro or memoQ TMS version you are using.
